Carnival in Sitges is a pretty big deal. This year it starts on February 10th to finish on Ash Wednesday February 18. It's over a week of events and parades for both children and adults.
The King of Carnival opening ceremony takes place on “Jueves Lardo” (fat Thursday) with the arrival of her Majesty Carnestoltas and the Queen of Carnival going to the Ayuntamiento (town hall) and reading a “predicot” to all citizens.
The Sunday parade Rua de la Disbauxa takes place with its tens of floats and thousands of dressed up participants walking and dancing across the streets in the center of Sitges.
On Tuesday the Carnival reaches its peak with Rua del Extermini taking place again around the center with many more participants. It starts at 7:30pm sharp and continues for over three hours. About 50 floats and over 3,500 participants wearing the most amazing, rich and colourful costumes participate in the parade. Music and fun surround the town. It is quite amazing the organisational effort and the creativity that is put into this event. What is quite remarkable is the participation of every Sigetans to the organisation of the Carnival week. During the parade in the floats you can admire people of all age dancing and having fan. Sitges Carnival is one not to be missed!
On Ash Wednesday the Carnival ends with the burial of the King Carnestoltes.
In this post I am showing some of my best shots from 2014 Carnival. Enjoy!
