This magnificent home is another one located in the beach front of San Sebastian. It was build by one member of the famous Americanos family Vidal Quadras who build several important buildings both in Sitges and in Barcelona while having an extraordinary entrepreneurial career.
In 1821, the Vidal Quadras abandoned Venezuela, coinciding with the defeat of the royalist troops against the Bolivarian army fighting for Maracaibo independence. While José María Vidal Robert wanted to return to Catalonia, his two sons Manuel and Alejo Vidal Quadras chose to stay in America and move to Cuba.
In a few years, Vidal Quadras amassed a fortune with their farming activities (mostly tobacco), commerce, management and urban estates, and increasing as well their business financial activity. The signing of the Vidal Quadras became one of the most (if not the most) important commercial and financial company in Santiago de Cuba and the entire eastern part of the island. Together with Jose Riera, another "son of Sitges" these were the only two companies in Santiago who acted as shippers and at the same time as "merchant bankers."
From the 1830s, Manuel and Alejo Vidal Quadras brothers traveled with increasing frequency to Barcelona and to Sitges where several properties were build including the beautiful Casa we are showing in this picture.
Casa Manuel Vidal Quadras was build in 1852 with a majestic neoclassical facade. At the entrance there is a marble plaque that refers to the origin of property and in the adjoining garden, with some beautiful palm trees, you can see the statue erected by the town of Sitges to the famous modernist artist Santiago Rusiñol i Prats of which we wrote about in a few others posts.
The Casa is located in carrer Port Alegre 9. Once one knows the history of this important family the look given to this building is certainly different and makes you step back about two centuries and think about this adventurous and, for a few lucky ones, amazing life at the times of Spanish colonies.
